Day 19: Reflection on Exploring Relationship Patterns

Theme: Recognizing and Understanding Maladaptive Relationship Patterns

First Reading:

Acts 16:1-10
“Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.”

Responsorial Psalm:

Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5
“We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”

Gospel:

John 15:18-21
“If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.”

Reflection:

In Acts 16, we see Paul making decisions based on the context of his audience. His willingness to adjust certain aspects of his behavior highlights the importance of being aware of how our relationship patterns are influenced by external circumstances and societal expectations. Our maladaptive interpersonal schemas often develop based on our past experiences and the people around us. These patterns can sometimes shape how we relate to others in negative ways.

In the Gospel, Jesus warns His disciples about the challenges they will face from the world. This is a reminder that relationship patterns must evolve over time. To grow in our relationships with others, we must be aware of social contexts and allow flexibility in how we interact with those who may oppose us or challenge us.

Action/Practice:

Today, reflect on a relationship where you tend to repeat the same negative patterns. Consider how your past experiences may be shaping your responses in this relationship. Make an effort to break this cycle by adjusting your approach, being mindful of the context and the needs of the other person.

Daily Goal:

Identify one relationship pattern that needs revision and take steps today to respond more consciously and compassionately.

Journaling Prompt:

“What relationship patterns do I tend to fall back on, especially in difficult situations? How can I adjust these behaviors to create healthier connections?”
